Copyright
The vast majority of documents held in public archives are subject to copyright. This means that there are limits on the copies of documents that we can provide for this family history. While we can consult records we cannot copy them under copyright law and pass them onto customers. However, it is possible for our customers to acquire the records themselves and we will assist in this process by providing transcriptions and full source citations as well as advice on how to buy copies of original documents for personal use.

What’s not included in the price?
Research from 1950 to present day. If you wish to include all your/the gift recipient’s current and extended family on the tree you will need to supply their full names, dates of birth etc. This includes children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. If you wish to include the offspring of a sibling or of an aunt for example, you will also need to supply the name of the sibling’s/aunt’s partner or spouse and their date of marriage.  However under the new General Data Protection Regulations 2018 you will need to provide signed written consent for every living individual you/the gift recipient wishes to include on the family tree. This can be arranged when you/the gift recipient completes our Application Form after the package has been ordered. Please be aware that adding living persons to a family tree will take about 90 minutes from your/the gift recipient’s research budget in order for this information ready for printing.

Deaths
An ancestor’s exact date and cause of death. In order to achieve a good balance of research and narrative on the budget, we do not automatically buy documentation to discover the exact details of an ancestor’s death. We may only be able to identify the year at no extra cost. If you or the gift recipient would like to know the exact date and cause of death, you can be billed separately for each search. Just let us know when research begins.

What is Four Surname Research?
For individual recipients we like to call this grandparent family history research, because it allows them to research all four of their grandparents’ surnames.

Remember though that everyone has eight great grandparents, so it will only search four of those great grandparents along each male line! This is because each great grandparent has a different surname: a total of eight surnames altogether.

If you want to research all the recipient’s surnames then you will need a massive budget to cover each generation as it doubles in size:

2 Parents
I
4 Grandparents
I
8 Great Grandparents
I
16 Great Great Grandparents
I
32 Great Great Great Grandparents
I
64 Great Great Great Great Grandparents
I
128 Great Great Great Great Great Grandparents

And so on. By the time we get to the recipient’s 10 x grandparents there are roughly 4096 of them, which is rather a lot for a genealogist to find!

We find a lot of people still don’t understand this in terms of what we research, so if you are struggling just contact us.

Are the ancestors’ wives and children included?
Yes. We will find out their wives’ full names, their years of birth, where they came from, and their parents’ full names where possible. We will also find the full names of their children, where they were born and their dates or years of birth. We do not trace all the females and their family trees (see What is Four Surname Research above). The research will only look at the father’s trees of both female grandmothers.

What about their occupations?
Wherever possible we will find out what they did for a living. We will also look for any information about their religion, any criminal activities, any probate, institutional records, overseers, poll book entries or anything about them in the newspapers. Please note though that budget does not stretch to exhaustive enquiries.

How is the final tree presented?
The gift recipi
ent will we receive a hardback book folder telling the story of their ancestors in a chronological narrative, detailing their lives and times. The length of the book is approximately 80 – 100 pages. The gift recipients’ ancestors are drawn by the genealogist in their historical context – this approach is more than a list of names and dates – it outlines the motives and actions of their ancestors in relation to the period in which they flourished. Ancestors are presented as people rather than shadows. After the genealogist’s chronological history narrative section, there is a family narrative outlining relationships, vital dates, and places of birth, marriage, and death with a complete annotated source list with citations. The hardback book folder will also, include at no extra cost (see Do you charge extra for documents? below), documents concerning the gift recipient’s relatives from birth and marriage, to census records. All families are different so contents will vary. Finally, the report includes a folded A3 family tree chart showing the gift recipient’s relatives. As this is a large tree some individuals may not be included on the A3 chart, e.g. the spouse of a distant cousin.

What are the differences between the hardback book folders?
There are two types. The package includes a plain green quality hardback book folder, but there is an option to upgrade to the embossed book folder in pastel as shown in the illustrations above.

Do you charge extra for documents?
No. Many other genealogists offer packages cheaper than ours, but further investigation will show they do not include family documents  or proof of your family tree included in the price, but as an optional extra. They will charge you more fees to buy the documentation they require to research your family tree accurately in addition to their basic cost. We believe if a high standard of research is to be achieved, proof should never be optional and it should be included in the price. At Family History Gifts, we include all the documents in with the price. We do not charge you extra for them.

What documents are not included?
We cannot search documents that are not in the public domain. This will include a number of 20th century record classes, most notably: military records including World War Two service records, personnel employment records, hospital, education, and coroner’s records to name a few. Many records are subject to Closure Rules.

Death certificates – see What’s not included in the price? above.

Will the gift recipient receive research updates?
We do not provide email, letter or phone updates… we think that’s boring! Much better to allow the gift recipient to login to their private family tree viewing area whenever they want and view their new ancestors! They will be able to instantly see all the new ancestors we’ve discovered. This is an exciting addition to our services. The gift recipient will need to have an email address to use the family tree login area, alternatively they can nominate a member of their family.

In which countries do you research?
We research in England, Scotland, and Wales for this package. We do not research overseas. If you require Irish research please see our Irish Family History to 1850.

The gift recipient has already started their family tree, can I buy this package? This family tree is costed for beginners only (i.e. for those starting back from their parents or grandparents). The further back one goes the more expensive it is to research a family tree, those costs are not included in the above price, so this package is not suitable for anyone who has already begun their tree.

Can the gift recipient work on the family tree with you?
Once the Application Form has been completed and sent to us, we will decide all research methods and stages. As a consequence it is not possible for the gift recipient to work on researching the family tree with us. Please see our Terms & Conditions, section 3. Your tree – controlling the Research.

What information do I need to start if I am buying for a gift recipient?
You will need to supply the gift recipient’s full name, date and place of birth, father’s full name and mother’s full name including mother’s maiden name. The gift recipient will receive more information about their family if you are also able to supply full names of grandparents too. The more information you can supply about living memory relatives, the more the budget will stretch to ancestors yet to be discovered.

How far back do you go?
This very much depends on the family because every family consists of unique individuals doing unpredictable things like changing their name, emigrating, immigrating and choosing to have illegitimate children.  This research gift aims to get to 1780 if possible.

How long does it take?
On average a minimum of 45-50 weeks after we have received your Application Form. Yes it is a big job and cannot all be completed at once. Research has to be undertaken and then we may have to wait a week for documents. Then more research, then another week or more for documents. The same process is done over and over again until the budget is used. The estimated time does not include Bank Holidays or seasonal holidays such as Christmas or Easter. Please allow extra time for these holidays. Also consider the following factors:

        • Not one family is the same as another
        • Historical research is unpredictable – it is not possible to know in advance where it will lead or whether it will be straight forward

        • To achieve a high standard of research, a genealogist needs time to search through all the necessary records in order to overcome hurdles and uncover the correct ancestors. At Family History Gifts we use the Genealogical Proof Standard and this requires a great deal of dedication.

        • With this in mind, 45-50 weeks is an estimate and not definite. Research may take 40 weeks, it might take 52 weeks; it is entirely unpredictable.

Imagine going to the library to find out information about something you know nothing about and being asked to predict exactly how long the task will take you?
