Research from 1950 to present day. If you wish to include all your/the gift recipient’s current and extended family on the tree you will need to supply their full names, dates of birth etc. This includes children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. If you wish to include the offspring of a sibling or of an aunt for example, you will also need to supply the name of the sibling’s/aunt’s partner or spouse and their date of marriage. Please be aware that this will take about 90 minutes from your/the gift recipient’s research budget to input this information ready for printing.
Your family can be divided into surnames, so for instance you have two parents – this is two surnames; four grandparents – this is four surnames; eight great grandparents – this is eight surnames; 16 great great grandparents equals sixteen surnames! This family history research and writing package concentrates on one of those surnames. It will trace, say, the gift recipient’s father, his father, his father and so on back to about 1780 if possible. The chart illustration below (see, What Will It Look Like?) shows how the tree might look once researched.
Note though, how research also uncovers other ancestors and family.
Yes. We will find out their wives’ full names, their years of birth, where they came from, and their parents’ full names where possible. We will also find the full names of their children, where they were born and their dates or years of birth.
It does not include, however research of their wives’ family trees, for that you need our Premium All Surname Family Tree.
Wherever possible we will find out what they did for a living. We will also look for any information about their religion, any criminal activities, any probate, institutional records, overseers, poll book entries or anything about them in the newspapers. Please note though that budget does not stretch to exhaustive enquiries.
The gift recipient will we receive a hardback book folder telling the story of their ancestors in a chronological narrative, detailing their lives and times. The length of the book is approximately 45 – 60 pages. The gift recipients’ ancestors are drawn by the genealogist in their historical context – this approach is more than a list of names and dates – it outlines the motives and actions of their ancestors in relation to the period in which they flourished. Ancestors are presented as people rather than shadows.
After the genealogist’s chronological history narrative section, there is a family narrative outlining relationships, vital dates, and places of birth, marriage, and death with a complete annotated source list with citations.
The hardback book folder will also, include at no extra cost (see Do you charge extra for documents? below), documents concerning the gift recipient’s relatives from birth, marriage and death, baptism and burial certificates to census, directory entries and army records. All families are different so contents will vary, but on average most customers receive about 15 documents with this family tree.
Finally, the report includes a folded A3 family tree chart showing the gift recipient’s relatives on their chosen One Surname line.
There are two types. The package includes a plain green quality hardback book folder, but there is an option to upgrade to the embossed book folder in pastel as shown in the illustrations above.
On the left is an example of a family tree and on the right a page from a narrative report showing the detail we include.

No. Many other genealogists offer packages cheaper than ours, but further investigation will show they do not include family documents or proof of your family tree included in the price, but as an optional extra. They will charge you more fees to buy the documentation they require to research your family tree accurately in addition to their basic cost.
We believe if a high standard of research is to be achieved, proof should never be optional and it should be included in the price.
At Family History Gifts, we include all the documents in with the price. We do not charge you extra for them.
We cannot search documents that are not in the public domain. This will include a number of 20th century record classes, most notably: military records including World War Two service records, personnel employment records, hospital, education, and coroner’s records to name a few. Many records are subject to Closure Rules.
We do not provide email, letter or phone updates… we think that’s boring! Much better to allow the gift recipient to login to their private family tree viewing area whenever they want and view their new ancestors! They will be able to instantly see all the new ancestors we’ve discovered. This is an exciting addition to our services.
The gift recipient will need to have an email address to use the family tree login area, alternatively they can nominate a member of their family.
We research in England, Scotland, and Wales for this package. We do not research overseas. If you require Irish research please see our Irish Family History to 1850.
This family tree is costed for beginners only (i.e. for those starting back from their parents or grandparents). The further back one goes the more expensive it is to research a family tree, those costs are not included in the above price, so this package is not suitable for anyone who has already begun their tree.
Once the Application Form has been completed and sent to us, we will decide all research methods and stages. As a consequence it is not possible for the gift recipient to work on researching the family tree with us. Please see our Terms & Conditions, section 3. Your tree – controlling the Research.
You will need to supply the gift recipient’s full name, date and place of birth, father’s full name and mother’s full name including mother’s maiden name.
The gift recipient will receive more information about their family if you are also able to supply full names of grandparents too. The more information you can supply about living memory relatives, the more the budget will stretch to ancestors yet to be discovered.
This very much depends on the family because every family consists of unique individuals doing unpredictable things like changing their name, emigrating, immigrating and choosing to have illegimate children. This research gift aims to get to 1780 if possible.
How long does it take?
On average about 9-10 weeks after we have received your Application Form. This does not include Bank Holidays or seasonal holidays such as Christmas or Easter. Please allow extra time for these holidays.
Also consider the following factors:
- Not one family is the same as another
- Historical research is unpredictable – it is not possible to know in advance where it will lead or whether it will be straightforward
- To achieve a high standard of research, a genealogist needs time to search through all the necessary records in order to overcome hurdles and uncover the correct ancestors. At Family History Gifts we use the Genealogical Proof Standard and this requires a great deal of dedication.
Imagine going to the library to find out information about something you know nothing about and being asked to predict exactly how long the task will take you? With this in mind, 9-10 weeks is an estimate, not definite.

Excellent service - Sunday, April 5, 2015Many thanks for the documents... Thank you so much for breaking down the brick wall I have been beating my head against for so long. I am truly grateful for the excellent service provided and for your kind advice which has helped me to broaden my own research methods.
I will certainly recommend your services to our local genealogy group at the next meeting, and will further avail myself of your help in the future should the need arise.
